Jonathan Schofield: The Paris Paintings
THE PARIS PAINTINGS
In February this year I made a trip to Paris, to see the Mark Rothko exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. I was also going to meet my seventeen year old daughter, who travelled to Paris a few days earlier as part of her A-level studies.
Paris is probably the city I have frequented the most; starting as a teenager, later as an art student and then for work (where I was involved in the fashion world). This meant I visited the city at least four times a year.
Arriving back there in February, I realised that Paris as a place and an idea was now deeply woven into my personal history. I had been there so many times I had a whole set of memories and feelings that felt like they needed to be processed into the way I live now, which is as a Painter.
Over the course of the weekend, I took my daughter to some of my favourite haunts and of course, much like showing a visitor where you live, you begin to see the place through fresh eyes. I was at once so happy to be able to do this with her but also keenly aware of the slightly melancholic undertow that accompanies the act of remembering and revisiting familiar places.
On my return, I quickly began a new body of work about the idea of PARIS… I see my paintings as essentially collages- a space whereby I can amalgamate all the thoughts, sensations and moods that exist in my head and through the deeply physical process of painting somehow create an object that stands on its own as a total record of my lived experience.
I have also created a playlist to accompany the paintings, I paint to music, so this is a combination of tracks I listen to as painting and tracks that have a relationship to me being in Paris over the years…

My Maanmies, Bruce French: Ellipsis
Titled “ELLIPSIS”, this exhibition brings together three of Europe’s leading artists, who are simultaneously devoted to introspection and the influence of the social body. The diversity of mediums and techniques each artist uses is driven by a shared desire to probe the human soul and its imprint into the contemporary world. The converging theme thus navigates between the interior and the exterior, playing with the ellipsis, a literary or cinematographic device that consists in omitting one or more elements of a narrative without affecting its comprehensibility. The exhibition context, therefore, allows visitors to restore this omission.
The art of My Maanmies embodies a spiritual exploration, illustrating a unique artistic ritual. Highlighting her mesmerizing creations, “String of Light” (2023) stands out for its construction, crafted from oil, bone glue, papier-mâché, chalk, and oil stick. It delves into the interplay of darkness and light within us.
“From One Room to Another” a diptych, symbolizes the passage of life with ink, papier-mâché, acrylics, and pigment, evoking the elusive understanding between life and death.
Another notable work is a new addition to her papier-mâché “Dissimulation” series, using rabbit skin glue and ivory black pigment, symbolizing the commemoration of pre-existing life and death’s integration into reality.
Also displayed are smaller oil paintings from her “Introspection” series, where material memory intertwines with personal experiences, inviting viewers to engage in introspection, prompting a question about the existence of a universal memory.
Bruce French’s work delves into our representation of social media, offering an analog response to our digital age. While visually captivating, his sculptures explore the blending of reality and falsehood in today’s world dominated by influencers. For “ELLIPSIS”, French showcases pieces from two ongoing series: “REALS” and “AMA-Ask Me Anything”.
“REALS”, an ever-evolving collection of over 100 sculptures, mirrors Instagram REELS, fostering community among creators. Each sculpture embodies the exchange between creator and audience, scattered across Europe to engage with various communities.
“AMA-Ask Me Anything” features quick responses in clay or ink, evolving into larger forms across various mediums. Inspired by online interaction, it reflects the open dialogue of its
digital counterpart, exploring the energy of exchanges in virtual spaces and inviting viewers to contemplate the dynamics of virtual dialogue.

Jonathan Schofield: Gorgeous Pink Rags
The title of the show is ‘GORGEOUS PINK RAGS’ and was inspired by the following quote from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald:
“They’re a rotten crowd,” I shouted across the lawn. “You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.”
I’ve always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because I disapproved of him from beginning to end. First he nodded politely, and then his face broke into that radiant and ecstatic and understanding smile, as if we had been in ecstatic cahoots on that fact all the time. His gorgeous PINK RAG of a suit made a bright spot of colour against the white steps…

Colin Pennock: Familiar Voices
Familiar Voices
This body of work began at NG Art Creative Residency in Maussane-les-Alpilles, Provence, France and was completed on-site at Serena Morton gallery.
For some time I have wanted an immersive experience of painting to see if it affected directly my painting approach or choices that direct my work.
I have been informed in the past by memories of landscape which tend to come from emotional experience to construct my paintings.
I have been resistant to direct plein air narratives because my intention is to filter direct experience with the remembered images in my mind.
I fell in love with the mauves and pale hues of Provence and have realised the similarities in other ways of the light in Australia.
The cicadas and the pops of colour from the mid tones of hue are also reminiscent to my home, although other elements are different. They are like friends we have not seen for some time and the reunion is a stirring of familiar relationships.
The rocks and formations have another meaning too. They bring a connection to the past – even centuries back. And these philosophical relationships of colour and mark making have developed into a unique language that are a continuous consideration throughout my work.

The Gallery Collection, Autumn 2020, a curated exhibition by Serena Morton, showcases a selection of artists and work that celebrates the history of the gallery and the long professional career of Morton as a curator, art dealer and gallery owner.
Morton began her art world career at Christie’s Auction House in 1994 (Print Department, Modern British, Post-War and Contemporary British Paintings and Sculpture).
